Middle Years Programme Overview
The IB Middle Years Programme emphasizes intellectual challenge.
All East Magnet students from grades 5 to 10 participate in the MYP. East educators create classroom experiences that encourage students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, preparing them for success in further study and in life.
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) helps students develop both subject-specific and interdisciplinary understanding. The MYP curriculum framework includes:
-
Approaches to learning (ATL), helping students learn how to learn by developing skills for research, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management
- Key and related concepts, helping students explore big ideas that matter
- Global contexts, helping students understand the relevance and importance of their study for understanding their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet.
The MYP culminates in an independent learning project called the Personal Project. Students complete a significant piece of work over an extended period of time, encouraging them to consolidate their learning and reflect on the outcomes of their work.
Diploma Programme (DP) Overview
The IB Diploma Programme is an advanced academic program for 11th and 12th graders at East. Students take advanced, internationally-minded courses in six subject areas (Language, Foreign Language, Humanities, Mathematics, Sciences, and Arts); a unique course called Theory of Knowledge; undertake a two year academic research project called the Extended Essay; and complete an experiential and reflective component called Creativity Activity and Service.
The IBDP experience is well suited for students who want to extend their academic career past high school, experience a rigorous and unique set of courses, and further develop their academic confidence and capabilities. IBDP students can earn college credit based on their performance on IB exams at the end of their senior year. East students who choose the IBDP pathway will take AP Human Geography in their 10th grade year.
